In Wayne’s Own Words: HSUS is first and foremost a Lobbying Organization

It’s critically important to understand where the enemies of agriculture, and in fact our very freedoms and liberties, are coming from, seeking first to understand. With that in mind, I read HSUS’ CEO Wayne Pacelle’s blog to understand what Wayne thinks.

This post really caught my attention, because like Wayne’s admission to the National Association of Farm Broadcasting last May that HSUS is “a sophisticated political organization,” Wayne says what he really means. While they spend tens of millions in slick advertising to convince Americans that they are an organization devoted to saving the poor dogs and cats of society, as Wayne points out, they are in actuality a well-funded lobbying organization first and foremost.

Note three things: first, West Hollywood is working to ban the sale of dogs and cats from pet stores… Let that sink in for a minute. While we bought our Labrador Tucker from a neighbor, our beloved cat Rizzy came from a Pet Store on West Broad Street, and she is irreplaceable.

Second, note that Wayne is spending a significant number of HSUS’ donor dollars to host “Lobbying” events in every state capitol to teach activists how to more effectively lobby on HSUS’ behalf. He furthermore references HSUS’ staff of paid professional lobbyists in the effort.

Thirdly, and most frighteningly for farmers, animal lovers, and lovers of the American concept of limited government, Wayne cheers the fact that “Last year, there were 121 new laws passed in the states… on puppy mills, factory farming, animals fighting, and fur labeling.” He notes that 93 such laws were passed the previous year.

Read this article, and then tell me that HSUS is an animal care organization with a straight face.

Earlier this week, I spoke at a West Hollywood, Calif. City Council meeting in favor of an ordinance to ban the sale of dogs and cats from pet stores.

One of the best primers in citizen lobbying can be found at our Humane Lobby Day events, which we’ve been hosting annually in state capitols across the country since 2008. At your local Humane Lobby Day you’ll both learn about and practice lobbying, participating in a morning workshop and then meeting one-on-one with your state lawmakers or their staff to urge their support for animal protection measures.

Last year, there were 121 new laws passed in the states, including groundbreaking reforms on puppy mills, factory farming, animal fighting, and fur labeling. This number of enacted statutes eclipses the previous record set in 2008—with 93 new laws passed that year.Read more at hsus.typepad.com
